Heavy Traffic Licence Training in Dunedin — Class 2, 4 & 5
Want to get your heavy traffic licence in Dunedin? Grant Keen is an independent NZTA-approved Course Provider and MITO-registered Assessor offering Class 2, Class 4 and Class 5 truck licence training and assessment in Dunedin and across Otago and Southland. Work is offered direct to owner-drivers, apprentices and transport fleet managers — getting drivers licensed, compliant and confident on the road without sending them north to Christchurch.
Every heavy vehicle licence course is delivered one-on-one or in small groups, on vehicles and at sites that mirror real Otago conditions: steep urban gradients, rural state highway, gravel haul roads and port-side manoeuvring.
Class 2 Licence Dunedin — Medium Rigid Truck (4,501–18,000 kg GLW)
Class 2 is the entry point into commercial heavy vehicle driving and the licence most Dunedin freight, courier and civil operators require for new hires. The Class 2 course covers the NZTA syllabus end-to-end: vehicle familiarisation, pre-trip inspection, road code theory refresh, on-road instruction across Dunedin's urban and rural networks, and the full practical assessment.
Typical duration is one full day of instruction plus assessment for licensed Class 1 drivers. Tailored multi-day packages are available for drivers who need additional hours behind the wheel.
Class 4 Licence Dunedin — Heavy Rigid Truck (over 18,000 kg GLW)
Class 4 unlocks every rigid heavy vehicle on New Zealand roads — tip-trucks, logging rigids, mobile cranes and the heavy plant used across Otago's civil and forestry sectors. The course builds on Class 2 fundamentals and focuses on the handling characteristics of larger rigid units: weight transfer, hill descent management, load security awareness and confident manoeuvring in tight yard environments.
Allow one day for licensed Class 2 drivers, with assessment conducted in a compliant Class 4 training vehicle.
Class 5 Licence Dunedin — Truck & Trailer (over 25,000 kg GCW)
Class 5 is the senior driver licence and the one that opens the door to long-haul, B-train, semi-trailer and combination work — the backbone of South Island freight, bulk and forestry transport. The Class 5 programme covers coupling and uncoupling procedures, combination vehicle dynamics, gradient and corner management on the Otago and inland routes, and the full NZTA practical assessment.
Designed for drivers with at least six months of Class 4 experience. Allow one to two days depending on prior combination time.
NZQA Unit Standard 24089 — Logbooks & Fatigue Management
Unit Standard 24089 is the NZQA-credited compliance training every commercial heavy vehicle driver in New Zealand is expected to hold. The course covers the Work Time and Logbook Rules in plain language: cumulative work time, rest period rules, correct logbook entry, common audit failures, and practical fatigue management strategies for long-distance and shift-based operations.
Delivered as a half-day course in Dunedin or on-site at your fleet yard for groups — a cost-effective option for transport managers rolling out compliance refreshers across the team.
Designed for Otago Fleet Operators
Grant works directly with transport managers, HSE leads and operations supervisors across Dunedin, Mosgiel, Port Chalmers, Balclutha, Oamaru and Central Otago to plan licensing pathways, schedule grouped training days, and keep evidence of competency audit-ready. Every course completion is recorded, certificated and where applicable submitted to NZQA — giving your fleet a clean compliance record without the administrative burden.
